Scale & Stand-off Scale Models have always been my favourites. I have been designing and flying them for many years, and did win many contests all over Europe. National: Between 1982 and 2004, I was 24x Dutch National Champion! : 9x in Waterflying (continous from 1982 till 1990!) 3x in F4C (FAI Scale), 3x in Large Scale, 9x in Stand-off Scale. International: Between 1988 and 2004: 8x Dutch Open Champion Stand-off Scale (2x Runner-Up) 1x German Open Champion Stand-off Scale. The only foreigner ever! (1x Runner-Up) 6x EUROPEAN STAR CUP CHAMPION Stand-off SCALE (1x Runner-Up) 1x Winner Graupner Euro Bodenlake Cup for Scale Waterplanes Winner of 40 International Scale Contests in: NL, D, P, CZ, A, CH, F, GB, B. So why did you never see my name in the F4c lists of European or World Championship contestants? Being a teacher my commitments prevent me attending these competions and my princepal, then, would not even allow me time-off on unpaid basis! | 001 | 002 |

CONTESTS RESULTS SHORT SUNDERLAND, Scale 1/10th. (1990-1997) 1990; I won with this model the Dutch Open Championship Stand-off Scale 1990 in static and flying. It was very windy with crosswind take-off and landing, and it was quite obvious at this point that the enormous fuselage depth created a vast area on which the crosswind took effect. To counteract this crosswind I had to use many rudder movements! Now I had won with the largest plane, this was quite a contrast to my winning in 1989 with the smallest plane, a little biplane. In that Scale competition year the Sunderland was very successfully, also at Woodvale Rally, England where I did win the flying part. Accident 1st Sunderland, 1990. Unfortunately in September that year on my way to the National Championship Waterflying, I was almost on the destination (1 km!), a large lorry because of his drivers inattention, flattened my caravan with the Sunderland in it. It was totally decimated and the technical installation heavily damaged, the whole of the caravan was only 50cm high and my son and I were slightly insured. But I have been persuaded by the organizers and other competitors to fly the Nationals with my spare- waterflying model, which fortunately was in the back of my car, instead of in the caravan. I got a host family for the night, and the other day, with help of my son Jorn I won convincing the National Championship Waterflying 1990! But I would have preferred flying the Sunderland and no Title, so wonderful was the experience flying the Sunderland on water. That is the reason I started to build a second one, a week later, in a big hurry for season 1991! Radio Interference 2nd Sunderland, 1991. The second Sunderland was even better and lighter and two weeks before the 4th Dutch Open Scale Championships she was ready, and I became Dutch Open Champion Stand-off Scale 1991. Woodvale Rally, England was now a great disappointment in static, in spite of this Sunderland was better! As it started raining, the Static Judges fled into a tent 30m away and did from inside their judgement !! Only 6,6,6, even for Craftmanship (last year 9 !!). But in flying I won again! Than came the German Open Championship Stand-off Scale 1991: static first place and after 1st round flying: leader. The next day weather was even better so the flying scores should raise, but than it happened, probably a second transmitter with the same freq. was switched on, because fail save did not enter, in any case there was interference!! The model started to spin, 3-4 turns, and suddenly radio-contact again, with all my knowledge (F3A aerobatic-class experience). I did get the giant model out of the spin, just 3-2 meters above the ground, she came out of it, and only 1 meter was left! Careful I could win some height again, what to do? Landing or go on, but I did not have to decide, suddenly full throttle came again ,another Radio interference! (On Purpose? Many contesters said yes, but how to prove, and who, and why? Jealousy?), nose raised again and the model came into a stall again on a slight height and hit the ground vertical. That was the end of the second Sunderland, and the end of a real chance to win the German Open Stand-off Scale 1991! Batteries were directly tested: 100% o.k.! The whole radio equipment was send into Graupner Service in Germany: 100% o.k.!!! Sunderland nr. 3. 1992: The reason that I build a 3rd one, was that nr. 2 was just once on the water! This one was ready in Mai 1992, four weeks before the 5th Dutch Open 1992, and became Dutch Champion Stand-off Scale 1992.
For the first time were held the EUROPEAN STAR CUP CHAMPIONSHIP's Stand-off SCALE, and I was; Runner-Up in final result, after flying 5 competitions in; the Netherlands, Germany (2x), Czech Rep. and England. In 1993: I was Runner-Up in the Dutch Open Championship Stand-off Scale. Runner-Up in the German Open Championship Stand-off Scale. 5th in European Star Cup Championship Stand-off Scale. In 1994, I did compete in contests with my new and very successful large 4 meter span B-17 FLYING FORTRESS , but won with the Sunderland the Graupner EURO CUP WATERFLYING 1994 for scale water-models in Hagnau on the Bodenlake, Germany. (Lake of Constanz) (in 1997, 1st in Static Result, and 3rd in Final Result), and it is nicer to see this plane flying on his natural element: WATER!!! The last time that I did fly with the Sunderland was in spring 2003, during a testflight I had to make a deadstick landing after a technical problem. The model had some damage, and up today I did not repair it (perhaps never?).
